The boundaries around what NBSC is, what its certifications represent, and what they don't.

NBSC is a private educational organization
The National Bushcraft & Wilderness Self-Reliance Council of Canada is a private organization. It is not a government agency, a military or law enforcement authority, a rescue authority, or a licensed trade regulator. Its certifications are educational competency indicators.
Certifications do not guarantee employment
We do not promise jobs. Many employers in adventure tourism, outdoor education, and remote operations value structured competency credentials; how they weigh ours is their decision.
Certifications do not replace emergency services training
Wilderness self-reliance is not first response. Level 4 instructors, for example, must hold an external wilderness first aid certification — NBSC does not replace that, and never will. Where formal medical or rescue qualifications are required, those qualifications must come from the relevant accrediting bodies.
Certifications do not eliminate wilderness risk
Wilderness training reduces risk. It does not eliminate it. Every NBSC field session begins with a written risk acknowledgement and a signed waiver. Carrying an NBSC credential does not change the fundamental nature of being in the wilderness.
Indigenous land & relationships
NBSC operates on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg Nation and many other First Nations across Canada. We teach Leave No Trace and ecological stewardship as core principles. We do not teach traditional Indigenous knowledge or claim authority over it. Where our work touches Indigenous heritage, we defer to and work with the relevant nations.
Verification is the source of truth
A credential is only valid if it returns an active status from /verify. Printed certificates, screenshots, and PDFs are convenient summaries — they are not themselves proof. Anyone — employer, regulator, member of the public — can verify a credential by entering the credential ID at the verification page.
